Athena and Bios Two in overhaul

There are currently two ships in the Trogir shipyard dock, Athena and Bios Two.
Athena is a tourist passenger ship sailing under the Maltese flag for the American company Grand Circle Cruise Line. It is 59.6 m long, 10.68 m wide, with a draught of 3 m, which enables it to enter shallower waters, and thus to access more easily the ports of the Adriatic cities which are the main destinations of its passengers.
In the following period the ship will undergo the regular annual general overhaul which involves corrosion protection, including the cleaning and painting of the underwater part of the hull and the replacement of zinc anodes, as well as the painting of the above-water surfaces, and the inspection of engines.
The other ship, Bios Two, is owned by the Split Institute for Oceanography and Fisheries. It is used for oceanographic and fisheries research in the Adriatic and Ionian seas and, if necessary, in other seas as well. It is 36.30 m long, 8.15 m wide, its draught is 3.5 m and it reaches the travelling speed of 11.8 nodes. In addition to the usual ship's spaces, the ship also has three laboratories, the dry, the wet and the microbiological lab, as well as an electronic engineering room. Workspaces have been adjusted to an 18-member research team, and 6 crew members take constant care of the ship.
The overhaul will include the inspection of the hydraulic winches, the movable side davit and the folding hydraulic crane, the underwater and above-water surfaces will be protected from corrosion and the zinc anodes will be replaced, and another two research probes will be installed.
The ships will stay in the dock until 12 January 2015, and then continue with their usual activities.
