Collection of signatures for the petition of the Metal Industry Union of Croatia for saving shipyard

The Metal Industry Union of Croatia has organized the signing of the petition for saving the Croatian shipyards. The petition is signed on site of the shipyards and at public places in the towns, in which the shipyard is registered, from October 5th till October 14th.

„Up to now, 760 signatures have been collected in Brodotrogir, but we are still collecting signatures. On Saturday, 900 signatures were collected on the fish market of Trogir. In total, we have 1660 for now, but this is not the final number since tomorrow, we will continue with collecting signatures from 7 am till 1 pm, whereby next to the shipyard and the fish market of Trogir, signatures will also be collected on the main square“, we learned from Slavko Bilota, the main commissioner of the Metal Industry Union for Brodotrogir d.d. The unionists intend to submit the petition with the citizens’ signatures at the Office of the Government of the Republic of Croatia on October 15th this year.

The Union informed us that they sent a letter to the Government of the Republic of Croatia since despite their warning the right time for selling the Croatian shipyards had not been chosen, and the Croatian Government had agreed the sale in times of the biggest economic and financial crisis. „We are not surprised with the results of the first round of the tender, and we ask for a postponement of the publication of the second round“, the unionists say. In the letter they have sent to the Government of the Republic of Croatia it was, among others, also stated that at that time the public signing of the petition by workers and citizens of the Republic of Croatia was organized, based on which the point of view, i.e. the opinion of the citizens with regards to the privatization of shipyards should be directly presented. Otherwise, “we are ready to protect our working places with any means, to ask for the resignation of all those who are responsible for the defeating result of the first round of the tender, and even for the resignation of the Croatian Government“, the letter says.

With the petition, the Government of the Republic of Croatia and the Ministry of Economy, Labor and Entrepreneurship are asked to request from the European Commission to postpone the second round of the privatization tender, all for the purpose of a more qualitative preparation of the tender and the selection of the most favorable offer. During the time till the realization of the second round of the tender, it is expected from the Croatian Government and the responsible Ministry to ensure normal business and the payment of the salaries to the employees.
