Memorial to fallen soldiers

Memorial to fallen soldiers from the wider area of the former Trogir municipality was raised on November 14, 2008 to celebrate the Day of the Town of Trogir and anniversary of the Brodotrogir Association of Veterans of the Homeland War, as acknowledgment and memorial to lives sacrificed to our country.

"Many have asked us why we chose to erect the monument at this particular place", said Ivica Mustra, president of the Brodotrogir Association of Veterans of the Homeland War on this occasion, continuing "only those who do not know how sacred this ground is to us can ask such a question. When evil from the east came marching towards our Beautiful Homeland, when our enemies sought to run over our towns and villages, conquer our sea and bays, it is from this place, the shipyard, that we left to fight against the conquerors of our homeland Croatia. Resentful of all the horror around us, of death and arson which became a part of our everyday lives, we spontaneously gathered here to defend our country."

Our shipyard gave us all requisite technical and material support. Unfortunately, many of the volunteers did not make it back alive. Many subsequently died from consequences of the War.

On behalf of all those who were not so lucky to return to their homes, our shipyard and enjoy freedom, let's wish for the shipyard to remain right where it is, where our grandfathers and fathers worked before us and where we still work today.

We thank the Management of Brodotrogir and Kairos Commerce which donated us the memorial. We also thank subcontractors who lent us wholehearted support, thinking of this initiative and shipyard as their own'', concluded Mustra.

Luka Brcic, deputy prefect of Splitsko-dalmatinska County, also addressed the gathering with several appropriate words and Vjeran Nadovski, representative of Zdenka Buljan, Mayor of the City of Vukovar, unveiled the memorial blessed by father Ivo Sadric from the parish of St. Jacob, with the help of Mustra.

Nadovski did not fail to express his thanks on the anchor presented to the hero city in November 2007, now adorning the Vukovar riverbank, concluding his speech with the famous motto of veterans of the Homeland War "Together in war, together in peace."  The festive unveiling of the memorial was then graced by the performance of harmony-singing group Tragos
